Our NHS Treatment
NHS treatment is available for most children under 26 years of age. Under current regulations, to qualify for NHS orthodontic treatment, you must be registered as an NHS patient with your dentist. Your dentist will refer you for an NHS consultation. Being referred to an orthodontist does not mean that orthodontic treatment will be provided under the NHS. You will be advised if you meet the criteria for NHS treatment.
Orthodontic treatment will only be considered where the patient has maintained a good standard of oral health. This means that tooth brushing must be of a very high standard with healthy gums and no teeth needing fillings or teeth recently filled.
For NHS treatment we may use a combination of removable and all-metal fixed braces. Appointment times may on occasion require younger patients to take time off school.
What if my child does not meet the criteria for NHS treatment?
Due to NHS restrictions some patients can no longer be treated free of charge under the NHS system because their dental irregularity is not considered severe enough when compared against the IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need) set out by the Scottish Government. For those patients who don’t qualify but still feel they would benefit from treatment we offer a self funded option called “Budget Braces”. This option allows the patient to fund their own orthodontic treatment at a much lower cost than private treatment. The patient will receive the same metal brackets as used for NHS patients. Treatment can be started almost immediately and even small dental irregularities can be treated.

Introducing Our Specialist Orthodontist - Yick Yee Chen (Simon)

Simon is the Specialist Orthodontist here at Kirkintilloch and has been at the practice for for 25 years. After completing his dental qualification BDS Glasgow 1990 and receiving First class Merit for the session of 1990 he went on to gain a wide range of qualifications. He then went on to gain his First class merit in orthodontics, William Hunter medal in prosthetics, Baxter dental prize and prize winner of the Glasgow society for the study of restorative dentistry and gaining a 2nd class merit in oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.FDS RcS (Eng) 1993. Simon carried out his postgraduate research and speciality training at Glasgow Dental Hospital and his Master of Science (MSc) project On Longitudinal study of shape changes in the human mandible using elliptical Fourier functions was published in 1997. Simon gained his Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) from the Royal college of England in 1997. MOrth RcS (eng). Where he has been on the specialist list for orthodontics held by the General Dental Council since 1997. Simon offers both private and NHS treatment.
NHS Referrals
All NHS patients need a referral from their dentist. After receiving a referral, we conduct a brief assessment to determine eligibility for NHS treatment. Most of our patients qualify for NHS funding; however, if you don’t, we offer a variety of private options to help you achieve a smile you’ll love.
