Invisalign has become a revolutionary solution in the field of orthodontics, offering an alternative to traditional metal braces with its clear, removable aligners. One of the critical questions that potential patients often have is: “What is the treatment time for Invisalign?” Understanding the timeline involved with Invisalign treatment is essential for patients to set realistic expectations and to plan accordingly. This comprehensive article explores the factors influencing the treatment time, the average duration, and how patients can optimise their treatment process.

Average Treatment Time of Invisalign

The average treatment time for Invisalign varies widely among patients, depending on several factors. On average, most patients complete their treatment within 12 to 18 months. However, some cases may be resolved in as little as six months, while more complex cases might take up to 24 months or more. The specific duration depends on the complexity of the orthodontic issues being addressed and the patient’s compliance with the treatment plan.

Several factors can influence the length of Invisalign treatment, including:

  1. Complexity of the Case: Simple cases involving minor tooth movements may be completed in a shorter time frame, while complex cases requiring significant adjustments to the bite or alignment can take longer.
  2. Patient Compliance: Consistently wearing the aligners for the recommended 20 to 22 hours per day is crucial for staying on track with the treatment plan. Deviating from this schedule can extend the overall treatment time.
  3. Age of the Patient: While Invisalign is effective for both teens and adults, younger patients may experience faster results due to their bodies still being in the growth phase, which can facilitate quicker tooth movement.
  4. Specific Orthodontic Issues: The type and severity of the orthodontic issues being treated (such as overcrowding, gaps, overbite, underbite, or crossbite) also play a significant role in determining the treatment duration.

Step-by-Step Process of Invisalign Treatment

  1. Initial Consultation: The Invisalign journey begins with an initial consultation with our orthodontist at Kirkintilloch Orthodontic Clinic. During this visit, our orthodontist will evaluate your teeth, discuss your goals, and determine if Invisalign is the right treatment option. This initial assessment sets the stage for creating a customised treatment plan.
  2. 3D Digital Impressions: If Invisalign is deemed suitable, the next step involves taking 3D digital impressions of the patient’s teeth using advanced imaging technology. These digital impressions are used to create a precise and personalised treatment plan, mapping out the exact movements of the teeth throughout the treatment process.
  3. Custom Aligners Fabrication: Based on the digital impressions and treatment plan, a series of custom aligners are fabricated. Each aligner is designed to make slight adjustments to the position of the teeth, gradually guiding them into the desired alignment. Patients typically receive multiple sets of aligners at once, to be changed every one to two weeks as directed by their orthodontist.
  4. Wearing the Aligners: Patients are instructed to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, removing them only for eating, drinking (anything other than water), brushing, and flossing. Regular wear is essential for the aligners to effectively move the teeth according to the treatment plan.
  5. Regular Check-ups: Periodic check-ups with the orthodontist, usually every six to eight weeks, are necessary to monitor progress, make any necessary adjustments, and receive new sets of aligners. These visits ensure that the treatment is progressing as planned and allows the orthodontist to address any concerns or questions the patient may have.
  6. Completion and Retainers: Upon completing the series of aligners, the active phase of treatment concludes. To maintain the new alignment of the teeth, patients are typically required to wear retainers. Retainers help prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original positions and ensure the longevity of the results.

  1. Wear Aligners as Directed: Compliance is critical to the success and efficiency of Invisalign treatment. Patients must wear their aligners for the recommended 20 to 22 hours daily. Removing the aligners for extended periods can delay progress and extend the overall treatment time.
  2. Follow a Strict Oral Hygiene Routine: Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential during Invisalign treatment. Patients should brush and floss regularly, as well as clean their aligners to prevent plaque buildup and maintain optimal oral health. Healthy teeth and gums can respond better to the treatment, potentially shortening the duration.
  3. Attend All Scheduled Appointments: Regular check-ups with our orthodontist are crucial for monitoring progress and making any necessary adjustments. Missing appointments can delay treatment and extend the timeline.
  4. Use Chewies for Proper Aligner Fit: Our orthodontist may provide “chewies,” small cylindrical cushions that help ensure the aligners fit snugly against the teeth. Chewing on these for a few minutes daily can improve the fit and effectiveness of the aligners, promoting efficient tooth movement.
  5. Avoid Damaging the Aligners: Patients should handle their aligners with care to avoid damaging them. Aligners should be stored in their protective case when not in use, and exposure to high temperatures should be avoided, as it can warp the plastic.
  6. Maintain a Healthy Diet: A healthy diet supports overall oral health, which is beneficial during orthodontic treatment. Patients should avoid sugary foods and beverages that can contribute to plaque buildup and cavities, which can complicate and extend treatment.

Advantages of Invisalign Treatment

  1. Aesthetics: One of the most significant advantages of Invisalign is its virtually invisible appearance. The clear aligners allow patients to undergo orthodontic treatment discreetly, without the noticeable presence of metal braces.
  2. Comfort: Invisalign aligners are made from smooth plastic, which is more comfortable than the metal brackets and wires of traditional braces. There are no sharp edges to irritate the gums or cheeks.
  3. Removability: The ability to remove Invisalign aligners for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene makes them a convenient option. Patients can enjoy their favourite foods and maintain regular oral hygiene routine without any special tools.
  4. Predictable Results: Invisalign treatment plans are created using advanced 3D imaging technology, allowing patients to see a virtual representation of the treatment progress and final results before starting. This predictability provides confidence and assurance throughout the treatment process.
  5. Fewer Office Visits: Invisalign treatment typically requires fewer office visits compared to traditional braces. Patients receive multiple sets of aligners at once and only need to visit our orthodontist every six to eight weeks for progress checks, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.

You tend to find the 1 star reviews are people who are and will never be self employed ,and look for fault in everything .If this practice was in any way unfit for purpose it would have been closed down many years ago ..let common sense prevail and visit this fine establishment and support your local businesses.
